JEWELS ADVICE – “As Abraham Lincoln said “And in the end,

March 20, 2015
I was asked to add this in my Sandyknows.com newsletter in 2011 written
by an original swingout dancer from the DFW area. Now it is 2015, have
things changed for the better, worst or stayed the same?
“Attention everyone that learned the original form of SWINGOUT: I
apologize for my original statement of letting the dance evolve. It
needs to stay in its original form. I went to a few events this month
and notice that I began accommodating the women I dance with because
their count was off and there was a mutation of west coast basic moves
in a swingout environment. I'm forcing them to move in a circle and they
are dancing on a slot, no tripling back or using and1 on their first
step and many other mistakes like sugar pushing. They just began
learning the dance and obviously they are being taught wrong.
You self-proclaim instructors are giving each other praises just to
increase your pockets with these events and raping the swingout
community of the purity and love of the dance. I CHALLENGE ALL OF YOU TO
GO BACK TO THE BASICS.... TO SHOW PEOPLE THE ORIGINAL MOVES WITHOUT ALL
THE FLASH AND TRASH. More than likely I'm wasting my breath because only
the instructors who know they are teaching it right would accept such a
Where are the basics? Have we forgotten them? I dance with everyone’s
students at these different events and there is a big difference between
2000 and 2011.
In 2000, it didn't matter what side of town you were on or what class
you were learning from when we came together everyone can dance together
with an exception of a few RHYTHMIC CHALLENGED PEOPLE. Because the
basics was the same everywhere!!! Now many of you all are teaching
I dance with or against every one of you and I know everyone remembers
the original form of the dance. However, your students don't reflect
what you are doing. Let’s get back to basics.
So if you are reading this and you are new to the dance, ask your
instructor whoever he or she may be to show you the original form of the
dance and if he can’t, there is a problem.
Start-off/transition, Full turn, Half turn, Double turn, Behind the
back, Walk and everything has the same count (12...123...123 or
12...3and4...5and6). These are the basics and everyone should be able to
come back to this. Anything outside of these moves are modifications of
something else added for creativity!
I'm going to take it upon myself to write and publish about your classes
and rate them on a 5star scale based solely off the execution of your
teaching of the six basic moves of swingout. My goal is to preserve the
dance put an end to bad teachings habit. So instructors please get on
board and tighten up your classes! This is good for the swingout
community and eventually we can be recognized by the world class swing
council (WCSC) as a swing category in larger competitions like West
Coast, Country Western, Hand Dancing, Lindy Hop, Chicago Step, and
If your instructor’s comment is "he is hating on me", well why would I
do that? When I'm not an instructor or a promoter of one of these events
and I don't stand to gain anything from giving your class a good or a
bad rating! I just love the dance! You can pass this on or tag anyone you
