SWING ETIQUETTE - A must read!!!
Because swing is a social dance, it is also a fun dance
and one should seek to dance with as many different
partners as possible, rather than focusing on a single
partner. Even if a lead and follow came to the dance
with each other, it is disfavored for them to spend the
entire night dancing only with each other. Although
traditionally a lead asks a follow for a dance,
followers are encouraged to do the same. The person may
either accept or reject the dance request. If the person
rejects the dance, whether they might not feel like
dancing or are reserving a dance for someone else, or
they might be tired or just shy, thank the person anyway
and ask someone else to dance. It is considered rude to
decline an offer for a dance and then dance the song
with another person -- unless you mention that you had
the dance reserved and promise a later dance to the
asker. You may have noticed on the dance floor that some
dancers are able to perform moves which match changes in
the flow of the music. These dancers haven't necessarily
memorized the music -- most swing music actually has a
regular and predictable structure. A true swing dancer
can usually dance to any genre of music. Remember

LEADING IS THE MAN'S RESPONSIBILITY!!!
Shared by Mr. Dell Johnson -
PRESTON ENTERTAINMENT
In partner dancing, a strong lead is
a must. Traditionally, the role of leading has been
assigned to men, while women have the role of following.
A good lead stems from proper use of the arms and body.
The man's upper arm and shoulder serve as the guide for
all dance movement. So, it's important to understand
that a limp arm won't be helpful in guiding your
partner. It is the man's responsibility to decide which
steps to use, and to control the direction of the couple
around the floor. On the other hand, the woman must
sense and respond to the man's lead. Graceful and
beautiful dancing can be achieved through a gentle but
definite lead, coupled with a sensitive and responsive
follow.
Leading Tips
Listen to the music, relating it to
the count and vice-versa. This will help to build
confidence. Start with the easy patterns. A good
knowledge of a couple of dance steps will provide a
solid foundation upon which to build. Before going into
variations be sure you can lead them, which will help
your partner to follow. Start each new pattern on the
"one" count. When necessary, make the most of your right
hand to help guide your partner in any direction.
Following
Women, your goal is to follow your
partner, adapting to his style and leading nuance (s).
To do this, hand connection (s) with light resistance
should be maintained. If you are too relaxed or too
rigid, leading becomes very difficult. If the man is not
yet a good leader, pay special attention to his body
movement, particularly his chest and shoulder movement,
in order to better follow his lead.
Following Tips
Whatever you do, don't lead! Be
alert to your partner's lead, but try not to anticipate
his lead! Become familiar with the basic patterns a
partner is likely to lead. When going through patterns,
try to take straight steps, either backward or forward
as the case may be (think of the "diving board" we
discussed). Support your own weight by keeping your feet
together as much as possible.
